Description
This kit is based on a standard CB&Q Depot design, built in 1886 at Trenton, Nebraska. Although the prototype is in disrepair, it still sports its original stamped steel shingle roof.
Two-story depots like this were found in many small railroad towns where housing was difficult to come by. As a fringe benefit, the station agent and his family (married men were preferred as they were less likely to quit) lived upstairs and a private outside entrance was provided to the second floor. The ground floor housed the passenger waiting area and the ticket counter/office.
As built, the Trenton depot had a trackside bay window, which was later removed. The freight house was also a later addition. The kit includes both so the station can be built in either the early or late style.
Designed for easy construction, the model consists of just four resin castings! The main building is cast in one-piece, complete with wood grain and nail hole details on each wall. The roof is also a single piece, with shingles cast in place to further speed construction. The freight house addition and bay window are also separate castings. Plastic Grandt Line doors and windows – 28 in all – are also included as separate parts to simplify painting and detailing; laser-cut window glazing is also provided.
For the finishing touches, the kit also comes with a two-piece herringbone pattern brick platform, two resin brick chimneys, six highly detailed resin crates, six highly detailed resin trunks, signs, a stencil, and a plastic Baggage Cart kit by Jordan Highway Miniatures with six pieces of hand luggage.
